Gov't asked to make changes in law on adoption

Adoptive parents in Uganda together with Uganda Child Rights NGO Network (UCRNN) and other children civil societies have called for change in the legal policy of the adoption process so that it can be done better.

They say they want to see Ugandan children adopted only here at home but not also abroad as it's still a case and also to make it easier for Ugandan parents who want to adopt to be allowed to do so by understanding all issues associated with child adoption.

They also want government to subsidize the legal costs of paying for lawyers to represent them in court while adopting these children.

They also call for the adoption awareness and support for all children in Uganda.

Sheilla Kawamara Mishambi the adoptive parent said this today while addressing media about the adoption awareness conference that will take place at Hotel Africana on  March, 7.

"I think to me it is , the legal cost because you have to pay for a lawyer to represent interest you have to pay for a laywer to represent before court.  So, if that cost could be subsidized by the government itself because whatever the adoptive parents are doing also helps us as a country because when we give these children an opportunity to live in a family and grow like all of us grew up with a loving family around them, we are able to become more responsible citizens and serve our country and they the children will not feel stigmatized," Kawamara said
